AFC Wimbledon move above MK Dons in table for first time ever

Last updated : 09 October 2016

Neal Ardley's side claimed their first-ever victory over Oxford - winning 3-1 - on Sunday to move up to 10th in Sky Bet League One, one point above the Dons who lost 1-0 at home to Port Vale later in the afternoon

AFC Wimbledon were formed in 2002 by supporters following the original Wimbledon's relocation to Buckinghamshire and rebranding as MK Dons

They were forced to start out in the Combined Counties League Premier Division, the ninth tier of English football, before a dramatic rise saw them promoted to the Football League in 2011

Just five years later they beat Plymouth in the play-off final at Wembley to secure promotion to League One, where they will face MK Dons - relegated from the Championship last term - in December and March

They have played MK Dons three times in cup competitions, winning 3-2 in a Johnstone's Paint Trophy clash in October 2014 following previous defeats in the Capital One and FA Cups , but are now sitting pretty two places above them in the third tier

Last year AFC Wimbledon were granted permission to make the move from Kingsmeadow back to Plough Lane, an area where Wimbledon played up until 1991, and build a new stadium
